Mid-Century dining table (by A Younger)
1,500.00€ Add to cartMid-Century dining table (by A Younger)
Before all else, this remarkable dining table stands as a celebration of the visionary work of John Herbert, the celebrated Head of Design for A Younger Ltd. In 1960, Herbert was honoured by the Furniture Makers’ Guild for his outstanding sideboards and tables, creations that helped define the elegance and refinement of British Mid-Century Modern furniture.
This rare dining table is one of those distinguished designs — a seldom-seen model that captures the quiet sophistication and architectural purity for which Herbert became renowned. Crafted in richly figured teak, the table features a stunning one-piece top with an exceptional flowing grain pattern. The natural movement within the timber creates alternating highlights and warm tonal variations, giving the surface a remarkable sense of depth and character beneath the light.
Unlike extending models, this version was designed with a fixed top, allowing the proportions and uninterrupted teak grain to remain beautifully balanced and harmonious. The table’s greatest triumph lies in the masterful joinery between the apron and legs. Herbert designed the structure with an elegant flush transition, where each element flows organically into the next with remarkable restraint and precision. This clean sculptural detailing gives the table its refined architectural presence while preserving the softness and warmth of the natural wood.
Raised on slender tapered legs, the table embodies the timeless principles of Scandinavian and British Mid-Century design — simplicity, craftsmanship, and enduring beauty. A rare and highly collectible piece that would sit effortlessly within both contemporary and traditional interiors.

Designed by Tom Robertson and handcrafted by A.H. McIntosh & Co. in Scotland during the 1960s, this exceptional dining table belongs to the celebrated Dunvegan collection, one of the most important and sought-after ranges produced by the renowned Scottish manufacturer during the golden age of Mid-Century Modern design.
The table is distinguished by its elegant boat-shaped top, a refined silhouette that perfectly embodies the timeless sophistication and restrained beauty of Scandinavian-inspired British furniture design. Crafted with remarkable attention to detail, the table includes one extension leaf ingeniously stored beneath the tabletop in a single piece. By smoothly pulling apart the main top, the hidden extension is easily revealed and positioned, showcasing the intelligent craftsmanship and practical elegance for which McIntosh became internationally admired.
What makes the Dunvegan collection especially important is the extraordinary organic joinery conceived by Tom Robertson. The seamless transition between the apron, legs, and tabletop demonstrates the sculptural artistry and cabinetmaking mastery that defined the finest Scottish furniture of the era. These beautifully flowing joints create a harmonious architectural form rarely found in modern production furniture.
Today, original examples from the Dunvegan range are increasingly collectible, appreciated for their exceptional craftsmanship, timeless proportions, and enduring design legacy. This table stands as a remarkable representation of 1960s Scottish Mid-Century Modern furniture, combining elegance, functionality, and heritage in one beautifully crafted piece.

History
John Herbert played a pivotal role as the head designer of A Younger Ltd from 1955 to 1970, significantly shaping the company’s identity through his innovative designs. His leadership in the mid-1950s was instrumental in guiding Younger towards modernist furniture inspired by Danish design, which positioned the company as a pioneer among British furniture makers. Herbert’s exceptional talent was recognized in 1960 when he won three awards from the Furniture Makers’ Guild for a sideboard and two tables, including one from the esteemed Fonseca range. As the late 1960s approached, Herbert, alongside Alan Pledge—who joined the team in 1967/68—embarked on an exciting new direction for the company, leading to the successful design and launch of the Toledo range in 1972. This partnership marked a significant evolution in A Younger Ltd’s offerings, showcasing their commitment to innovation and quality in furniture design.
