Mid-Century Teak Dressing Table by Meredew — Handcrafted in England, 1960s

A distinguished expression of mid-century British design, this Meredew dressing table was handcrafted in England during the 1960s. Constructed in warm, rich teak, it embodies the company’s elegant transition from post-war traditionalism to the understated modernism inspired by Scandinavian aesthetics.

The piece features refined proportions, clean architectural lines, and smoothly gliding drawers, each fitted with distinctive solid teak handles. The broad tabletop is complemented by a striking triple mirror, designed to capture light and reflection in perfect balance — a hallmark of Meredew’s practical yet refined design approach.

Meredew Ltd, a little-known but respected British furniture maker, was a medium-sized manufacturer in the 1960s and 70s, based in Letchworth Garden City, Hertfordshire. The company’s origins trace back to London, when owner Frederick Hard relocated some 50 families to Letchworth in 1914. By 1938, the firm employed 177 people, with Frederick’s son John overseeing engineering and cost management.

In the mid-1950s (around 1955–57), Meredew appointed their first in-house designer, German émigré Alphons Loebenstein. At age 57, Loebenstein guided the company toward a design philosophy reminiscent of G-Plan, blending functional elegance with modern appeal. While some sources attribute certain Italian-style pieces to him, Meredew maintained that an Italian designer also contributed to their collections, reflecting the firm’s openness to international influences.

This piece has been meticulously restored with great reverence for its original character. Each drawer has been carefully tended to, its structure preserved and strengthened, while the entire surface has been gently sanded and finished in traditional Danish oil. This treatment not only nourishes the wood but draws out its natural luster, allowing the grain to shimmer with a golden warmth that speaks of history and quality.

All original features have been thoughtfully retained, honoring the spirit of the era and the hand that first shaped it. Please note: a small mark remains on the top surface—subtle, yet present—a quiet testament to its journey through time. Despite the painstaking care taken during restoration, this trace could not be entirely erased, and stands now as part of the chest’s honest story.

Perfect for those who cherish the beauty of authentic materials and the soul of storied design, this seven-drawer tallboy is more than storage—it is a statement of heritage and quiet luxury.

White and Newton sideboard (Peterfield collection)

This sideboard is a handcrafted piece from the 1960s, designed by Philip Hussey and made by the renowned cabinet maker White and Newton in Portsmouth, England. Hussey created this piece for the Peterfields Collection, featuring light teakwood, curved lines on the top and a flat front with minimalist built-in handles. This sideboard’s elegant and timeless design showcases Hussey’s mastery of his craft and the exceptional quality of White and Newton’s workmanship.

Philip is one of the unsung heroes of British furniture design who deserves to be far better known! As a young man of 24, he was appointed to replace Arthur Edwards as head designer of White and Newton in 1964. They were then a successful medium-sized maker of contemporary furniture, which was a little conservative in style. In the late 1960s, he pushed some boundaries, particularly in some of his sideboard designs, which moved White and Newton into a much more modern, stylish, minimalist direction. Some of these designs were very popular and came up for sale quite frequently, while others were too ahead of their time and are unfortunately rarely seen today. When they do appear, they’re now recognised as design classics.

Viktor Wilkins designed these floating bedside tables for G-Plan in the ’60s in England.
In our restoration workshop, we added an extra feature to the bedside tables: a hanging bar with three holes that allow you to hang them directly to the wall without using the leg.
The bedside tables always need to add a screw to the wall to avoid tilt.

The restoration of the table has been successfully completed; however, a visible spot remains on the surface of one table. This imperfection is minor and the table is still in serviceable condition.
