Set of Eight Walnut Armrest Chairs by Gordon Russell, 1960s

Set of Eight Walnut Armrest Dining Chairs by Gordon Russell, 1960s

This distinguished set of eight armrest dining chairs, designed by Gordon Russell in the 1960s, exemplifies the refinement of British mid-century design. Handcrafted in rich walnut, the chairs retain their original condition and have been fully restored, with every joint carefully tested to ensure structural integrity. The wood has been treated with Fiddes hardwax, enriching its natural warmth and ensuring lasting protection.

The seats are upholstered in vibrant blue vinyl, with cushions containing internal springs — a detail that enhances comfort while adding a pleasing solidity and weight to each chair. With their clean lines, graceful proportions, and armrest design, these chairs achieve a balance of elegance, durability, and function.

The design bears the hallmark of Gordon Russell, one of Britain’s most influential furniture designers of the 20th century. Knighted in 1955 for his services to design, Russell was a leading advocate for uniting craftsmanship with modern practicality. As director of the Council of Industrial Design, he championed high-quality, accessible design, leaving an enduring impact on post-war British interiors.

This set stands as a true testament to Russell’s ethos — honest in material, generous in comfort, and timeless in form.

A pair of Siesta lounge chairs by Relling for Westnofa (1960)

Ingmar Relling for Westnofa — “Siesta” Lounge Chairs & Coffee Table, 1960s

A composed ensemble from the age of quiet refinement: a set of Mid-Century Siesta lounge chairs, designed by Ingmar Relling for Westnofa and made in Sweden in the 1960s. Upholstered in black leather, the chairs rest in poised slings, their sculptural bentwood frames offering that signature, gentle flexibility for which the Siesta is renowned. The coffee table echoes the language of the chairs—clean lines, honest construction, and a calm, balanced stance—drawing the arrangement into a harmonious whole

This is Scandinavian modernism at its most disciplined: restrained in ornament, generous in comfort, and crafted to endure. The leather bears the soft, lived-in lustre that only decades can bestow; the frames remain true and supportive, inviting daily use while honouring the workmanship of an earlier time.

    Pair of leather lounge chairs.

These leather lounge chairs, once a part of the 60s collection at the renowned Maskrey’s furniture store in Cardiff, are now available for comfort. With solid wood frames and caramel leather upholstery, these chairs are in good vintage condition, showing only normal wear and tear due to age. While the designer and the crafting company remain a mystery, I can assure you that these chairs are not just a piece of history but also the most comfortable lounge chairs you’ll ever experience.

Robert Maskrey was an influential furniture retailer and philanthropist. He ran the Welsh retailer Maskreys from 1970 to 2011 and had a 50-year career in the furniture industry.
He played a key role in introducing many of mainland Europe’s top furniture design brands to the UK for the first time. Known for his love of design and as one of the trade’s best buyers, he frequented furniture shows worldwide. In the 1950s, Maskreys became a specialist in sourcing and stocking innovative, contemporary home furnishings. It was recognized for showcasing the latest designs and styles and pioneering trends.
The company was the first to bring blond wood from Scandinavia to the UK in the 1950s, and it also introduced Ligne Roset and Hulsta to the UK in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
