Robert Heritage was adept at coming up with new ideas, which is a good example. Meredew, in the 1950s – 1960s, was aiming at the middle market and did nothing to push the boundaries until around 1968. Our catalogue from January 1969 introduces this fantastic model and two others, presumably by Loebenstein and his in-house team.
Robert Heritage is probably best known for his many designs for the high-quality maker Archie Shine, but he was an independent designer. He worked for several other British furniture makers over the years and was an influential professor of design at the RCA.
Heritage had a fantastic ability to come up with designs that looked different from each other. No other Heritage style links his creations, so his work for Archie Shine is different from that for other companies, and this model shares no features with anything else he designed. In this model, we see how he brilliantly mixed the teak with brown leather for the handles.
We have here an example of its mastery with a beautiful and well crafted and finished teak, too. This sideboard gives us the opportunity to divide spaces due to its well-finished backside.The sideboard has been completely restored and is presented in excellent condition. Please note that the bottom drawer on the left-hand side has a small patch. This mark was present when we purchased the piece, and our restorers have carefully worked to disguise it as much as possible. Despite this minor imperfection, the sideboard is in excellent restored condition.
It has been sanded and re-polished in full.

The dresser features an attractive symmetrical arrangement of nine smoothly running drawers. Three smaller drawers are positioned centrally, flanked on either side by two banks of three full-width drawers, creating a balanced composition that is both visually striking and highly practical. The continuous walnut grain, warm natural colour and refined detailing highlight the outstanding craftsmanship for which Bassett became renowned.
Founded in 1902 in Bassett, Virginia, Bassett Furniture Industries grew from a family-owned sawmill into one of America’s most respected furniture manufacturers. During the post-war decades, the company earned an international reputation for producing beautifully crafted furniture using premium hardwoods, combining traditional cabinet-making techniques with the clean, modern aesthetics that came to define Mid-Century American design.
This particular dresser has an interesting provenance, having been imported from the United States in the early 1970s by an American family who later relocated to England in the 1980s. It has remained in the same family ever since, adding a wonderful layer of history and authenticity.
Our professional restoration team has carefully restored the piece while preserving its original character. The walnut has been meticulously sanded and refinished with premium hardwax oil and Danish oil, enhancing the timber’s rich grain and providing a durable, natural finish. Every drawer has been inspected, adjusted where necessary, and now runs smoothly, ensuring the cabinet is ready for many more decades of everyday use.

I came across these two large pine bookcases at an antique fair in the south of England, and I fell in love instantly. Their graceful proportions, generous dimensions, and the refined moulding along the top give these pieces a quiet authority and timeless charm.
At present, I have images of only one bookcase, as the second is currently in our restoration workshop and will be ready soon. Both share the same elegant design, though the second piece is slightly smaller in height and length, while maintaining the same width.
Each bookcase features five adjustable shelves, all beautifully handcrafted in pine, offering ample and flexible storage while celebrating the natural warmth and texture of the wood.
A fine example of traditional craftsmanship, these bookcases embody the enduring spirit of classic English design—functional, honest, and full of character.

A piece born of grace and quiet ingenuity, this compact dressing table was designed by the revered Arne Vodder and handcrafted by Ølholm Møbelfabrik in Denmark during the golden age of Scandinavian modernism, the 1960s. Fashioned from vibrant, warm teak, its grain flows like rippling silk, rich in tone and steeped in the natural beauty so beloved in Nordic design.
The composition is both sculptural and poetic. A striking Y-shaped frame in solid teak cradles the main body with elegance and strength, allowing the central box to appear suspended—floating, almost ethereal, as if lifted by a breath of Danish air. This architectural flourish is not mere embellishment; it embodies the Danish principle of form serving function with grace.
The dressing table features a thoughtfully arranged bank of five drawers: two larger ones on either side, and three petite drawers nestled just below the original mirror—perfectly proportioned for treasured essentials. This sideboard is a handcrafted piece from the 1960s, designed by Philip Hussey and made by the renowned cabinet maker White and Newton in Portsmouth, England. Hussey created this piece for the Peterfields Collection, featuring light teakwood, curved lines on the top and a flat front with minimalist built-in handles. This sideboard’s elegant and timeless design showcases Hussey’s mastery of his craft and the exceptional quality of White and Newton’s workmanship.
Philip is one of the unsung heroes of British furniture design who deserves to be far better known! As a young man of 24, he was appointed to replace Arthur Edwards as head designer of White and Newton in 1964. They were then a successful medium-sized maker of contemporary furniture, which was a little conservative in style. In the late 1960s, he pushed some boundaries, particularly in some of his sideboard designs, which moved White and Newton into a much more modern, stylish, minimalist direction. Some of these designs were very popular and came up for sale quite frequently, while others were too ahead of their time and are unfortunately rarely seen today. When they do appear, they’re now recognised as design classics.
